I have been OBSESSED with throwing a craft night at my place ever since I saw cute little party DIYs on Pinterest. My issue with Pinterest is that sometimes I get a little too inspired and I want to make everything. It’s an issue. After about 2 weeks of non stop Pinteresting (yes, it’s a verb in my life) I narrowed down my top three crafts for the party:
1. Crystal Metal Cuffs a la Glitter ‘N Glue – I thought this was super cute and stylish. Glue, crystals and metal cuffs. Easy enough right? I ordered the crystals from Artbeads.com and got the cuffs from eBay. I ordered the E6000 off Amazon. Now, I made a mistake with the cuffs. I thought they were all going to be the same size,but they weren’t. Apparently I was so excited to find cheap cuffs that I didn’t read the description. The cuffs came in 12 different sizes. Luckily, my girls are easy going and no one really was attached to having a cuff of a certain size. We had so much fun laying out different designs and awkwardly glueing the crystals onto the cuffs.
Tips: I would suggest having tweezers if you decide to do this because all of our fat fingers kept getting in the way of placing them on the cuff properly.
2. Pumpkin Spice Latte Body Scrub a la Domestic Bliss Squared– I got the jars, pumpkin spice, wooden sticks, grapeseed oil and almond oil from Amazon. I hit up the grocery store for the brown sugar and coffee grounds. You basically mix all the ingredients together and pack it into a mason jar. I have been using this scrub since Saturday and my skin feels so soft! Most body scrub recipes are 1:1 ratio of oil to sugar, this one is a 1:4 ratio, which is just right. I was worried my skin would feel greasy after using it because of the oil, but I was totally wrong. My arms feel so smooth, and they smell like pumpkin spice coffee! It also took everything in me not to take a big spoonful of the scrub and eat it. This was the was the project everyone was the most excited about. I think part of it was the whole PSL hype and the having your own homemade skin product. I will definitely do another body scrub if I have another craft party.
Tips: One bag (2lb) of brown sugar will be enough for 5 people. Also the recipe makes 16oz of body scrub, I just ended up giving people either a sandwich bag for the extra or an extra jar since I ordered 8 oz jars.
3. Porcelain mugs and Sharpies a la Pinterest– This is the easiest one out of all three. Make sure to order oil-based Sharpies so that the design doesn’t wash off the mug. I ordered the normal Sharpies originally, then I did some more research and learned that the oil-based ones are definitely necessary. Luckily, I was able to return the normal Sharpies and the get the oil-based ones on time for the party. I got the mugs from Bed, Bath and Beyond with my handy dandy 20% off coupon and a $5 off coupon. (My mom hoards Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons and then sends them to me. It’s fantastic.) You basically draw your design on and then bake the mugs in the oven for 30 minutes at 425 F. I plan on giving my mug to a friend for a housewarming gift with a bunch of loose leaf tea. 🙂
Tips: The red marker changes color in the oven to a purple-y/magenta color. I have heard the BIC oil based markers tend to stay true to their color once baked. Also, the markers bleed through painters tape, but a small brush and acetone can fix any smudges or mistakes.
I wanted to choose easy, intuitive crafts that you don’t need an outstanding amount of artistic talent to make. No one felt “un-artsy” or like their craft failed. I also made a bunch of finger foods that weren’t messy to eat (bread/cheese, cut up fruit, small cupcakes, guacamole/chips, etc) to keep everyone well fed.
